Chapter News

  • May 2019 Capstones of Nursing

Our May 2019 Capstones of Nursing Research Day was a great success, thanks to our keynote speaker, Margie Smotherman ('86), as well as senior BSN students in NU410 who presented both at the podium and in poster format.

A luncheon honored graduating seniors in the Class of 2019 and was followed by our annual business meeting and election of Rho Omega chapter officers.

Invitations for membership will be going out to qualified seniors in the Class of 2020.   Please nominate nurse leaders from the community, as well.   Names may be sent C/O Sharon McGahan, outgoing counselor.   She will be working with Assistant Professor Rafael Tubongbanua, incoming Counselor.

Welcome, Janet Head-French, who has graciously agreed to be our Rho Omega President and Jana Ogden, our new Vice President. Sharon McGahan is continuing on the Board in the role of Treasurer, and Sarah Delaware will act as Secretary.

THANKS to Brenda Wheeler, Pam Melvin, Jana Ogden, Teak Nelson, and several other local chapter members who stepped up to the plate to help  Capstone Day run smoothly.

Our 19th Annual Capstone of Nursing Research Day will be held on Thursday, May 2nd in the SUB.   Our keynote speaker, Marguerite "Margie" McGahan Smotherman, BSN 1986, will be speaking at 10:15am on "Touched by Technology: Nursing for One & Many".

Senior student research posters will be on display in the Activities Room throughout the day.   Luncheon, our annual business meeting and election of officers will be in the Georgian Room, beginning at 11:45am. Podium presentations by selected seniors will take place at 1:45-5pm.

We are celebrating the 15th Anniversary of our chartering as Rho Omega Chapter by Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

    Hope to see you there!
  • IMPORTANT INFO about donations & checks to Rho Omega

The official name on our bank account is NOT Rho Omega...it is Sigma Theta Tau International.

HISTORY:  It turns out that our local bank account  is actually in the name of Sigma Theta Tau Intl, with subtitle of Truman Nursing Honor Society. This is partly due to being able to use the tax ID number of Sigma, but also due to the fact that the name of the organization started out as Truman Nursing Honor Society 20 years ago, but didn't get changed with the bank when we were chartered as Rho Omega. So the bank doesn't "recognize" checks made out to Rho Omega when we make deposits.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE make out any checks for Capstones, lunch, donations, etc. to Sigma Theta Tau Intl, with Rho Omega Nursing Honor Society in the "memo line".

  • Induction of 19 New Members on Oct. 5th

CONGRATULATIONS to our 19 new members who were inducted into Sigma's Rho Omega Chapter on Oct. 5th.   This number includes one person from the ABSN Class of 2018, 17 senior students from the BSN Class of 2019, and one Community Nurse Leader.

Our speaker was Kendra Jones DNP, RN.  Her presentation was entitled "Patient, Family, and Community Centered Care in Cuba: Reflections on Health and Wellbeing in a Complex Country."

Family, friends, and Rho Omega members joined the inductees for a lovely banquet and ceremony in the Student Union at Truman.
  • CONGRATS May 2018 Grads!

CONGRATS to our newest members (inducted) in October, 2017.   Graduate with pride on Saturday, May 18th....and remember to wear your Sigma purple and white honor cords.
  • Capstones of Nursing Research a Great Success!

Our 18th annual Capstones of Nursing Research on Thur, May 3rd was a great success. Our Keynote Speaker, Marcia Beck, alum from 1977 and past president of Truman Nursing Honor Society, presented on her research and work related to lymphedema management at the national level.
"Take-aways" (easy to remember) were PEP (Put Evidence into Practice) and Look4LE "app" (look for a lymphedema therapist).

At our luncheon & annual meeting, next year's slate of officers was approved, and one lucky senior won the cardiology style stethoscope (courtesy of the Nursing Dept.)

Twelve seniors presented their capstone research from the podium, and  eleven presented their research as posters.   In addition, breakout sessions included presentations by Shelby Leppin, Kendra Jones, and Sam White.  Sarah Delaware displayed a poster about the new SIGMA brand/logo.

Many underclass students were in the audience and learned that they, too, would be presenting next year, and that invitations for Sigma membership would be arriving for many during the summer.
